WHAT

School are confronted with a double challenge.  On the one hand our society is becoming more diverse and on the other hand, inclusion becomes a part of daily educational policy. For school teams it’s not easy to change  the teaching practice that gradually had developed in the past.  Schools have to adapt rapidly to a new surrounding and context. 

In this course we look at how pupil’s guidance can evolve to meet the requirements of a diverse society. The course includes input, reflection and transfer exercises, practical work and study visits to schools.

The course is organized by Almadaforma, the Portuguese centre for teachers’ continuous development, and the school group Carlos Gargaté (Charneca da Caparica) in association with Eekhout Academy. 

The course is run in Lisbon – Beach (Costa da Caparica) from Sunday 6 May (14.00 h) till Friday 11 May 2018 (12.00h) 

Content of the course:  

- Diversity and education;
- Examples of school policy on inclusion and diversity (with contribution of participants);
 
- How to address individual needs in combination with the group needs;
- How to deal with talents and restrictions;
- How to change school’s organisation to address the new challenges; 

- Exploring new ways of working and teaching;
- Exploring new ways of organising the school;
- Criteria for pupil grouping (based on age, interest, talents, special needs, skills, attainment levels…); 

- How to organize pupils individual care and support;
- Does every pupil have to achieve the same goals; 

- Short introduction to the Portuguese education system;
- Study visits to schools with observation, interviews and exchange of experience;
- Reflection and transfer exercises towards own education context.

AcQuired competences

  • Develop an understanding of the challenges and opportunities of diversity and inclusion at school;
  • Develop a (school) vision on diversity and inclusion;
  • Understand different ways of organizing a school;
  • Be able to design another way of organizing the school addressing the individual needs of the pupil in combination with the needs of the group;
  • Pick up ideas from other countries which can be incorporate and transfer into the own practice;
  • Improved use of colloquial English;
  • Improved knowledge of other European educational systems;
  • Improved insight of differences and similarities between European countries, resulting in a better understanding and respect.
